WHAT IS COMMON RAIL

Common rail refers to a sophisticated fuel injection system where a small accumulation tank, known as the Rail, maintains constant fuel pressure. This pressure is always available to supply electronic injectors, ensuring optimum injection performance. The need to reduce fuel consumption and make diesel engines quieter and more efficient led to the development of the common rail system. The first vehicles equipped with Common Rail were introduced to the market in 1997.

 

 

SYSTEM FUNCTION

A fuel pump continuously draws fuel from the tank and sends the required amount to a secondary pump, the “HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP,” after filtering out impurities that could cause premature wear. The high-pressure pump compresses the fuel to a pressure of 1350 bar and transfers it to the Rail via a connection pipe. The Rail mitigates pressure oscillations caused by the opening and closing of the injectors and the continuous discharges of the pump.

Fuel is then transferred from the Rail through connection injectors, which are controlled by an electromagnetic valve, directly into the engine’s combustion chamber. Excess fuel, needed to open the nozzles, is sent back to the tank along with leakages from the pressure regulation valve and the high-pressure pump itself. In this system, the amount of fuel injected is determined by the driver’s input via the accelerator pedal, while the timing and pressure of the injection are calculated and controlled by the electronic control unit (EDC). The EDC registers the driver’s intentions through the accelerator pedal’s sensor and, in conjunction with other sensors that monitor the engine and vehicle’s operating conditions, manages engine regulation.
